CAMO2018: Lee Ying Ying’s mature performance the highlight of Day 2

National women’s single, Lee Ying Ying persevered to a rubber sets victory over Taiwan’s Chiang Ying Li on the second day of the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2018 (CAMO2018) at Axiata Arena, KL Sports City.

The youngster’s brilliant start saw her take the first set with less fuss before narrowly missing out on the second due to some tactical changes by her opponent.

She then showed her maturity and regained focus in the third set to eventually take the match 21-14, 19-21, 21-7 and join compatriot Goh Jin Wei in the next round.

She said after the match, “I am delighted with the win although it was not easy especially in the second set where Ying Li’s change of tactics caught me off guard. She began hitting with increased intensity and I simply couldn’t cope”.

Vivian Hoo-Soong Fie defeated Japanese pair, Naoko Fukuman-Kurumi Yonao 16-21, 21-18, 21-15 in the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2018 today.

The 20 year old also thanked the local crowd for cheering her on which gave her the added drive to win the match.

“The crowd definitely spurred me on to refocus and gain confidence to close the match. I hope that the strong support continues as I face tougher opposition in the next round” added Ying Ying who will face World No.3 P.V. Sindhu next.

In the women’s doubles, only two out of five national pairs made it through with Lim Chiew Sien-Tan Sueh Jeou easing pass American pair, Ariel Lee-Sydney Lee 21-5, 21-5 before Vivian Hoo-Soong Fie Chi overcame Naoko Fukuman-Kurumi Yonao of Japan in three sets (16-21 21-18 21-15).

The other three pairs of Lim Jee Lynn-Yap Zhen lost to Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara 12-21, 6-21, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean to Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi 16-21, 22-24 and lastly Goh Yea Ching -Tee Jing Yi to Kim Hye Rin-Kong Hee Yong 19-21, 18-21.

In the first match earlier today, World No.1 Tai Tzu Ying was simply too strong for another national women’s singles representative, Soniia Chia who crashed out 10-21, 9-21.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei will lead Malaysia’s challenge in the CAMO2018 second round alongside the other local players who qualified from round 1. The action starts from 1pm tomorrow.
