27 Jan Slumping Petaling Jaya BC Suffers Yet Another Defeat
Petaling Jaya Badminton Club (BC)’s roller-coaster season continues as they fell to yet another disappointing defeat, this time to Cheras BC 6-14 in their SS Purple League (SSPL) 2017/18 Stage 2 Group A encounter at the Sports Arena Sentosa, Old Klang Road earlier today.
The SSPL 2017/18 Stage 2 was a chance of redemption for Petaling Jaya BC who underperformed throughout Stage 1 despite qualifying for the Finals in Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting. But they have failed to live up to expectations heading into the knockout phase next month.
Their opponents of the day, Cheras BC got off to a flying start after national shuttler, Chong Yee Han punished Petaling Jaya BC’s young and error-prone Labieb Muhzafar Lakamagi with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-3) drubbing in the first men’s singles match.
The winning momentum carried over into the second match with Cheras BC’s new Indonesian import, Bellaetrix Manuputty saw off Petaling Jaya BC’s Lee Zii Yii 3-1 (11-4, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4) in the women’s singles category.
The game was done and dusted as Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Mohd Arif Ab Latif picked up a 3-1 (11-7, 10-11, 11-5, 11-9) win over Petaling Jaya BC’s Jagdish Singh Dhanoa and R. Satheishtharan in the men’s doubles match to secure Cheras BC’s first win of Stage 2.
Shela Devi Aulia and Terry Hee Yong Kai heaped even more misery on Petaling Jaya BC as the Cheras BC mixed doubles pair won their match 3-1 (11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 11-4) against Ti Wei Chyi and V. Thanesh.
But captain, Goh Giap Chin secured some consolation points Petaling Jaya BC as he defeated Cheras BC’s Chong Wei Feng 3-2 (9-11, 11-10, 11-6, 8-11, 6-5) in the last match of the tie.
“I guess our team did not have the right balance that’s why we lost both our Stage 2 match but things will be different for the Finals as we plan to go all out and include our stronger foreign players,” said Petaling Jaya BC’s team manager, Yeoh Kay Lun.
Meanwhile, Cheras BC’s head coach, Rashid Sidek was delighted with his team’s big win over the defending champions today.
“To collect 14 points against a strong opponent like Petaling Jaya BC is a good achievement. I hope my players can continue this good form for tomorrow’s final Stage 2 match. I also hope that we can qualify for the automatic semi-finals spot in the Finals – that would make things much easier for us,” said Rashid.
In the 12pm match, Bangsar Hawks BC and Serdang BC finished 7th and 8th respectively in this season’s SSPL as the Hawks won the 7th/8th place playoff match 10-7 at the Sports Arena Sentosa, Old Klang Road.
