National Women’s Singles: There’s Light at the End of the Tunnel

National women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei and Lee Ying Ying continue their journey into the quarterfinals of the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2018 (PMM2018) presented by Daihatsu after winning their Round 2 matches at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur Sports City earlier today.

Jin Wei got the ball rolling after her impressive straight sets 21-11 21-11 win over Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po.

“I played better today than I did yesterday. I did my homework and studied my opponent (Yu Po) which allowed me to read her game. I will keep on going and try my best to win my games. Although I will be the underdog in tomorrow’s match against Ratchanok Intanon but I will be sure to give her a good fight,” said Jin Wei.

Lee Ying Ying was also on form as she defeated World No.14 Aya Ohori 21-18, 17-21, 21-11 at Axiata Arena earlier today.

Her national teammate Ying Ying however stole the show as she pulled off an upset 21-18 17-21 21-11 win over her higher-ranked and highly experienced opponent, Aya Ohori of Japan.

“Maybe my opponent was a little bit under pressure so I just played my game and set the tempo early on. I was not satisfied with my previous two games but today’s result was totally unexpected. It was probably the best performance in my career so far since the World Junior Championship back in 2015,” said the ecstatic Ying Ying.

“For the next round, I will try to replicate my form from today. No matter what, I will do my very best,” she added.

Rio Olympic silver medallists, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong got one up over national teammates, Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi after winning their second round match 21-17 21-17 to book a place in the next round.

Mixed doubles pairs, Lai Pei Jing-Tan Kian Meng and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai enjoyed easy passages into the quarterfinals of the PMM2018 where they will be facing each other tomorrow.

But it was the end of the road for Lim Yin Loo and Yap Cheng Wen as the national women’s doubles pair fell to China’s Tang Jinhua and Yu Xiaohan 21-14 21-18.
