27 Aug AFC02: Amirul vs Brandon has makings of fiery showdown

The second edition of the Asia Fighting Championship (AFC) scheduled for 21 September at Axiata Arena, KL Sports City (KLSC) promises to be a no-holds barred match-up when local fighter, Mohd Amirul Ariffin takes on Singapore’s Brandon Ng.

Both fighters will be battling for the 66kg title on the night and Amirul Ariffin, also known as ‘Ban Mero’, is determined to put on his best performance as he will be in action in front of his home fans. He anticipates a tough encounter.

National Muay Thai boxer, Mohd Amirul Bin Ariffin will be in for a tough match up against Singaporean, Brandon Ng.

“I have never met Brandon in the ring before, but I am well aware of his superior physical advantage especially in height, which means I will have to come up with a suitable tactic and apply it to the fullest to try and cancel out his height advantage,” said Amirul.

“Last year, I fought in the previous AFC edition in Singapore and overcame a Korean opponent. Though this will be my second appearance in this event, I am very excited to be fighting in front of my home crowd as I want to show the fans my true fighting qualities,” added Amirul, who has represented Malaysia twice in the SEA Games.

Realising he has an uphill task ahead of him, Amirul intends to stay focused and to prove how determined he is to put on a creditable show he will join his teammates at the centralised training camp as soon as possible to prepare for the showdown with Brandon.

“Currently, I am still attached with my employers (PDRM), but have already applied to leave earlier for centralised training to prepare with Ali Yaakub and other fighters until the fight night next month,” Amirul disclosed.

“I am not taking this fight lightly as I have seen Brandon fight and he has a good fighting technique which I must adapt to when in the ring with him”.

Brandon is Singapore’s Muay Thai poster boy as he looks to extend his winning run in the AFC after beating Chooi Hoon of South Korea at the Marina Bay Sands last year.

The 24-year-old Brandon, who idolises Muay Thai superstar Buakaw Banchamek, will surely want to return to winning ways after slumping to a points defeat to another Thai fighter Trijak Sijomtrai in the All Star Fight in Hong Kong in May.

AFC is a new brand which presents a futuristic concept of Muay Thai featuring some of the world’s best kick-boxers as it aims to foster ties between the competing countries.
