Local stars not rattled by big names at Malaysia Open 2018

The Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2018 (CAMO2018), Malaysia’s premier badminton tournament, will feature the world’s best players alongside our crop of national stars from 26 June till 1 July at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur Sports City.

Malaysia’s sole representative in the men’s singles, Datuk Lee Chong Wei will hope to smash his way to a 12th Malaysia Open crown despite being drawn to face heavyweights like Victor Axelson of Denmark and China’s hotshots Lin Dan and Chen Long en route to the final.

Likewise in the women’s singles, Soniia Cheah opens her quest for the title in what is expected to be a tough encounter against World No 1 Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Taipei. The other two Malaysians in the category, Goh Jin Wei and Lee Ying Ying will also take on opponents from Chinese Taipei in the form of Pai Yu Po and Chiang Ying Lee respectively.

The mixed doubles sees three national pairs battling for glory with newly crowned US Open champions Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying looking to continue their good form alongside Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai.

The home fans can also look forward to supporting four Malaysian pairs including Olympic silver medallists Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in the men’s doubles as well as five national pairs in the women’s doubles.

CAMO2018 Organizing Committee Chairman, Datuk Ng Chin Chai said, “So far, almost all the top ranked players will be here for the tournament.”

“Looking at the current draw, I am certain we will see some very close battles and top quality badminton throughout the tournament. As hosts, our shuttlers will have the full backing of the home crowd which is a huge advantage. So I hope our badminton fans will be out in full force at the competition venue to cheer on our national stars and at the same time get to see some of the world’s best shuttlers strut their stuff during the competition,” added Datuk Ng when contacted.

Being one of the five Super 750 level tournaments of the BWF tour this year, the CAMO2018 offers total prize money of US$700,000 for the winners of the respective categories.
