26 Jan Puchong United BC picks up where they left off
Puchong United Badminton Club (BC) remain unbeaten in this season’s SS Purple League (SSPL) after edging Petaling Jaya BC 9-7 during their Stage 2 Group A match at the Sports Arena Sentosa, Old Klang Road today.
Puchong United BC got off to a quick 3-0 start as Liew Daren was a class above his opponent of the day, Labieb Muhzafar Lakamagi of Petaling Jaya BC. Daren won the battle in straight sets (11-8, 11-1, 11-4).
They then opened a 5-point lead after the women’s singles match thanks to Deng Xuan’s 3-1 (11-5, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7) win over her Petaling Jaya BC opponent, Lee Zii Yii.
Mak Hee Chun and Lim Khim Wah delivered yet another straight sets win in favour of Puchong United BC as they trashed Petaling Jaya BC’s Jagdish Singh Dhanoa and R. Satheishtharan 3-0 (11-3, 11-9, 11-6) in the men’s doubles showdown. The result also guaranteed Puchong United BC’s eighth win of the season and the first for Stage 2.
“I used to partner Mak during our national team days so it is nice to play with him again. We showed today that we still have that chemistry and we combined well together. Things are looking good for our team at the moment. I think this time we can go all the way and win the title,” said Khim Wak after his match.
Petaling Jaya BC finally showed signs of life in the mixed doubles match as Ti Wei Chyi and V. Thanesh picked up a straight sets win of their own, beating Puchong United BC’s inexperienced pair of Ng Qi Xuan and Wong Wai Jun 11-6, 11-6, 11-8.
It was too little too late for the defending champions despite Goh Giap Chin’s 3-0 win in the second men’s singles match. Giap Chin displayed a true captain’s performance by beating Puchong United BC’s Hong Kong import, Wei Nan in straight sets (11-5, 11-3, 11-10).
Earlier in the day, Petaling BC secured their first win of the SSPL 2017/18 Stage 2 after beating Kepong BC 12-6 in their Group B tie at the Sports Arena Sentosa, Old Klang Road.
Despite the win, Petaling BC’s coach, Ismail Saman was not satisfied with his players’ displays.
“Our performance for today was not up to our usual standards as the players needed more time to regain their momentum due to the long break. I hope they can work on their weaknesses and exhibit more spirited performances in the next game,” said Ismail.
“I also hope that they will continue to fight till the very end to get that automatic semi-finals spot as it will definitely be a major boost for us. We only have one more game to go before the Finals so I want my players to go all out for the win,” he added.
